#82 In God’s Image: Become More Like God

One of the chief callings on our lives is to become more like God. Even though we are made in the image of God we are called to continue the process of being more like God. By going against the nature of Man that we inherited from Adam and instead to grow more like God. This is the special call of all believers as Paul says “do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him” (Colossians 3:9-10). In other words stop being your old self and grow into your identity as one created in the image of God.

Paul reiterates his claim that we out to become more like God in Ephesians 4:22-24 “that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth” (Ephesians 4:22-24).

Finally our being made in the image of God is made manifest in the arrival of Christ. Christ is perfectly in the image of the father. And We are called to follow his example as in 1 Peter 2:21

“For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps” (1 Peter 2:21). If we are to lean into this calling on our lives to follow Christ we must first learn who Christ is and what he has done.
