#45 Praying The Lord’s Prayer

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come;

thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation;

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory,

for ever and ever.

Amen.

Versions Compared

When comparing these three versions it is striking how similar Matthew and our traditional version are to each other. Luke on the other hand omits much of what Matthew includes. From this difference it may be concluded that Matthew recorded the full prayer.

Using each part

1 Our Father,

Acknowledge your relationship with God. Confirm and proclaim it.

“Do we not all have one father? Has not one God created us?” (Malachi 2:10)

Set yourself right with all people and show yourself to God with a clear conscience.

11 And lead us not into temptation;

Ask God to help not make mistakes.

“Do not incline my heart to any evil thing, To practice deeds of wickedness With men who do iniquity; And do not let me eat of their delicacies.” (Psalm 141:4)

12 but deliver us from evil.

Ask God to direct your actions.

“The Lord will protect you from all evil; He will keep your soul.” (Psalm 121:7)

13 For thine is the kingdom,

Repeat who you think God is.

“Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth; Yours is the dominion, O Lord, and You exalt Yourself as head over all.” (1 Chronicles 29:11)
