IN THIS LESSON
What Is Marriage?
My wife and I have been married for five years as of 2024. We have two wild little kids and are loving life, each other, and living for God. This course (if it can even be called that) is designed to walk you through a series of questions and conversations. This course is meant to be done with your spouse but it is my opinion even single people could learn from this course.
With that said happy trails!
Consider as a Christian, what do you believe is the purpose of marriage? I am not talking about the construct of a marriage; man and woman. But rather the purpose of marriage as in why marriage. I believe that marriage has two intertwined purposes. One is for humanity to provide a safe nurturing place to raise kids. Beyond this though there is also a spiritual purpose to marriage.
What do you think is the meaning and purpose of marriage?
(By the way, throughout the course I will be throwing in questions like this. Please stop, discuss, and then continue reading.)
Throughout the Bible, in the Old and New Testament, we see our relationship with God described as a marriage. Such as in Ephesians 5:31-32, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church.” In that verse, Paul is calling back to Genesis 2:24 when the institution of marriage was established by God. But this is a two-way street if, our marriages are supposed to be examples of how God relates to us, then how God relates to us, is also an example of how we ought to relate to each other.
How should our relationship with God be reflected in our relationship with each other?
Why should you work on your marriage? Marriage is all about growth. If your life is not better (and harder) because you're married maybe you are doing it wrong. It has been my experience that most people don’t work on their marriage and the US’s 50% divorce rate backs that up. Marriage is not meant to make life easier. But working on your marriage makes life better.
Why do you want to work on your marriage?
