Yearly Check-in

Every year we try to set goals, but a major part of that is our yearly check-in. A yearly check-in is where you go out of your way to see how you have changed that year. Consider Proverbs 19:21 which says, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.“ If you plan alone your plans will fail (Proverbs 15:22). Yet, if you plan together you will see that God blesses those plans (Proverbs 16:3).

It is at this point in the creation of this course that my wife said “what about grace?“ Grace is vitally important in a marriage. It is only by the grace of God that we are saved. And it is only by grace that we may grow in our relationships with each other. When we fail to meet our spouses expectations it is by grace that we ought to show each other how we need to grow.

  • Does God want us to make plans?

  • Is your marriage better when you are on the same page about the future?

I encourage you to take the love languages test on a yearly basis. This test goes over the main ways we give and receive love. It is very helpful in meaningfully loving your spouse. Furthermore with the Yearly Check-in Worksheet go over how you actually give and receive each love type.

Ask the hard questions. Ask your spouse how am I failing? What’s working what’s not. It is the little things that kill a marriage. Bad habits that are built up over type and never addressed. Have you ever noticed driving down the road a large pothole? That’s the same thing. A small crack forms and over time water seeps in and car after car rolls over it until all that is left is to tear up the road and start over. Fix the crack today, it’s easier.

  • Ask Each other, how am I failing you? (for the love of God be kind and offer grace here)

  • What is the biggest thing I could do to make your life better?

By the Way go ahead and take the Myers-Briggs test at least once, you might learn something.

Go ahead and complete the Yearly Check-in Worksheet. And if you find that useful sign up for a yearly email reminder to do it again!
