IN THIS LESSON

Where To Start?

Our relationship with one another is a reflection of our relationship with God. How can we love our spouse if we do not love God? Prayer is a tool that God has given us in order to communicate with him. This makes it possible to have a relationship with God and just like marriage a relationship with God is based on communication. I have noticed that prayer draws me closer to God, making me kinder and more forgiving. When you pray for your spouse it transforms your selfish thoughts and complaints into grace and love.

  • What do you think happens when you pray?

  • How do you feel when you pray for your spouse?

  • When was the last time you prayed for your spouse or at all?

You can choose today that from now till the day you die you will pray for your spouse every day. I have consistently failed to meet that standard but I desire to pray often. It all comes to our question from earlier what happens when you pray? If the answer is you are closer to God, and are a better person than it is to your own detriment to not pray. The Bible even says in Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.“ Husbands and wives should pray together regularly together and alone. Here is a short prayer that you can pray together right now.

God we call on your name. Your blessing we seek God. Let us come closer to you. Father bless my spouse, let your blessings come. Let us seek you for all time. Humbly we come before you Father. To pray, to learn to pray. Like a ship in the sea in the midst of the storm we fall to our knees and seek you. Lord, you bless the land with water, the sky with winds, and bless us the same. Bless our marriage with love. So let it be. Amen

I will leave you with a couple of final questions:

  • What are some examples of good and bad marriages that you have seen?

  • What is your parent’s marriage like and how has that affected your marriage?
