IN THIS LESSON
What's The Goal?
So far we have walked through the purpose of marriage, and the importance of prayer in marriage. Now we will explore goal setting in marriage. In lesson one I mentioned that the purpose of marriage has two purposes; a human one, to raise kids; and a spiritual purpose, to draw closer to God. When it comes to that second goal we must periodically check in with each other to set goals in how we want to grow. It holds us accountable to each other. It even makes it easier to grow as your spouse gives you grace in the process and encouragement along the way. In years past my wife and I have set goals such as being better at prayer or becoming better at being at peace. Those are of course overarching goals with dozens of smaller goals that build towards that end.
What is an aspect of your life that you would change for the glory of God?
Will you decide today to make that change?
Our lives are filled with meaning from the things we do or don’t do. Every choice you make defines who you are. So why not choose to create a good story? Marriage is not meant to be easy but it brings so many blessings into our lives. What does it mean to create a good story? It is a choice to see your life from God’s perspective instead of your own. Instead of seeing life full of problems that are hopeless, you instead say God is using this. It is a choice to grow closer to God regardless of circumstances.
If your life together was a story would it be a good one? Why?
How can you make that story better?
I want to present you with a real challenge. Create a goal for this next year. It should be something that will draw you both closer to God. It should also have 3-10 sub goals that you can track and cause a result. Consider Proverbs 16:3, “Commit your works to the Lord and your plans will be established.“ This verse encompasses the point. When you tie your marriage to God and make plans accordingly God is with you!
What is your goal for this upcoming year?
How will you know if you achieved your goal?
